Extreme Chairing presents Trail Ride 2008.
This was the longest ride of the year, all taken place through the forest and
spanning a total of 43 miles that takes 3 days too complete, all in
wheelchairs . The starting point of the Trail ride is at Beck Lake forest preserve
in Glenview IL. and ends at the Wisconsin state border. The event took place on September 27th & 28th . Extreme Chairing and all participants ride to raise awareness, and money for spinal cord injury research.

This year 2 people showed up for the first day of Trail Ride 2008.  John J2 Mryczko who had completed the Trail Ride 2 years in a row was back to try and make it 3. This year he would not be alone, he had some company and competition. Kaney O’Neill who has a C5 SCI and has been to smaller PWRA events decided to give Trail Ride 2008 a try.

They left and rolled out on the trail from Beck Lake Forest at 1pm. The weather was warm, bright, and beautiful. Many of the trees started changing to there fall colors and made the ride even more visual. The ride was not all great and there were a few problems.

One of the problems was Kaney's wheelchair speed. She had gotten work done to her wheelchair and the chair speed reprogrammed itself to factory settings. Her speed was around 5 mph, while J2’s chair was set to 9.5 mph. Regardless they pushed on and kept close together. It’s a good thing they did, because at one point of the trail, about 2 miles in J2 got himself stuck on a rut. His chair’s back wheels were in the air due to bottoming out the center of his chair. He was in luck and had kaney rolling behind him, when she rolled up she helped him by pushing him out. They continued onward and made it 5 miles from the start or half way to checkpoint 1. Due to her wheelchair speed and shoulder pain Kaney's Trail Ride day would end early.

J2 continued on the trail and sped forward trying to make up some time. He was 2 miles back into the trail and again had a problem. He had dropped his MP3 player on the ground. Being 2 miles from the nearest road and nobody around he did not have many options. It was to leave the MP3 player, call someone, or just wait. He decided to call kaney who lived near by. She sent her friend and assistant Marina to help him, but before she could leave the house, and after waiting 20 minutes 2 bikers rolled up and helped J2 out. He was again back riding. The forest trail was very littered with large, medium, and small branches making for a rough ride when going full speed up until checkpoint 2. The rough ride also hurt the left wheelchair motor which started squeaking.  At checkpoint 2 he swapped his battery pack for a fully charged one, and continued on. The rest of the trail ride that day was uneventful and he made it to the day 1 finish successfully.

Unfortunately day 2 and the rest of the Trail Ride was not so successful. Due to weather of scattered showers, lack of participants, and wheelchair part problems day 2 of the Trail Ride would not happen, and the 2008 Trail Ride would end early. The 43 mile ride was not successful but there were accomplishments and records made. For Kaney this was her first Trail Ride event and longest trail riding distance accomplished. J2 set a distance and speed record for day 1, beating all 3 past Trail Ride years. He thanks his MK Battery sponsor for that.

We hope to hold the 43 mile Trail Ride again in 2009, and hope to find more sponsors who can recognize our willing efforts.
We are still collecting donations for Trail Ride 2008 until October 31st.
The money will be used to help fund Spinal Cord Injury Research.
