My name is John J2 Mryczko and I am a disabled action sports athlete. I havent been disabled all my life.
On June 3rd of 1999 at the age of 19, I was involved in a high speed motorcycle accident that broke my neck resulting in a spinal cord injury that has left me paralyzed from the chest down. Before my accident I was involved in action sports for over 10 years. Being involved in BMX, skateboarding, and snowboarding since the age of nine my life never had a dull moment. After my injury life seemed to stand still, I was no longer able to participate in the sports I loved and have been apart of for more than half my life. My ability to do the sports I love has been put on hold temporarely. My drive,adrenaline, and extreme lifestyle still run through my veins, and on many days I go threw adrenaline withdraws. There are many days a week I get bummed because I just want to get on my bike or board, but the only thing I can do is use my power chair as a way to fill my love for action sports.
I participate in two new sports called Power Wheelchair Racing (PWR) and Chairing. I am also a custom car fenatic and have a custom 2002 Dodge GC EX show van. In the next few months I will also be jumping and racing dune buggies.
There are 600,000+ people who are wheelchair bound in the USA, and there are 12,000 new SCI injuries and many more other disabilities that happen every year. There are not many action
sports or adaptive action vehicles that are available for those with high-level injuries and limited mobility. These sports open eyes and give new challenges and adventure to those in wheelchairs. These sports are good for the mind, body, and soul. When I’m racing through the trails or jumping opsticals this wheelchair turns into wings and gives me a taste of the freedom I once had.
